Research story: The health system effects of Pay for Performance in Pwani Region, Tanzania

Drawing on the findings of a research project of the Resilient and Responsive Health Systems (RESYST) consortium, this video reflects on the health system effects of pay-for-performance (P4P). It is based on an evaluation that was done in the Pwani region of Tanzania, where P4P was piloted to increase deliveries in health facilities and improve maternal and child health. The video addresses the effects of P4P on facility resourcing and resource allocation processes, the behaviour of health workers and their relationships with patients, relationships between workers and managers, and accountability mechanisms.
