Dr Chinyere Mbachu was recently admitted as a fellow of the West African College of Physicians.

Dr Mbachu is a senior resident doctor in the Department of Community Medicine of the teaching hospital of the University of Nigeria in Enugu. She has been working with the Health Policy Research Group (HPRG) of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria (Enugu Campus) on various aspects of CHEPSAA’s work plan.

After 5 years of postgraduate residency training in Community Medicine, she recently passed her final postgraduate fellowship examination. This qualifies her to act as a consultant physician.

The examination involved a formative assessment of a research proposal and a summative oral examination on the principles and practice of Community Medicine, as well as a defence of her dissertation entitled Effect of peer health education on knowledge, perception and practice of screening for cervical cancer among women in Enugu state, Nigeria.

She is currently working on projects of the HPRG that relate to evidence-based policy, including documenting the models that the HPRG has used in its attempts at getting research into policy and practice and a comparative analysis of the role of evidence in the development of policies in Nigeria in the areas of Human Resources for Health, Integrated Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health and Oral Health. In addition, she is also developing a proposal on TB control policies and plans in Nigeria and how they address the social determinants of the disease.
