Nangami MN, Rugema L, Tebeje B, Mukose A. Institutional capacity for health systems research in East and Central Africa schools of public health: enhancing capacity to design and implement teaching programs. Health Research Policy and Systems. 2014; doi: 10.1186/1478-4505-12-22.

This article covers an organisational capacity assessment that was conducted by seven schools of public health in Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. It assesses the capacity of these schools of public health to design health systems research curricula and teach the subject. It focuses on four key themes:

  • The context for designing and teaching curricula relevant to health systems research;
  • The alignment between the existing curricula and competency- based principles;
  • Staff members’ perceived interest in health systems research and their capacity to teach it; and
  • Opportunities for aligning health system priorities to health systems research teaching programmes.
